Jonathon S. Wright is a climate scientist in the Department of Earth System Science at Tsinghua University. He specializes in the flows of water and energy through the Earth system. His group studies topics at scales ranging from the physics of cloud formation to the global monsoon using a wide variety of data types, from global climate models to atmospheric and oceanic reanalysis products to direct observations of water isotopes.

报告摘要：

Swirling above summer storms, the Asian summer monsoon anticyclone functions as both gateway and gatekeeper to water vapor and other tropospheric tracers entering the stratosphere. Although well monitored from space in recent years, many details of the anticyclone and the air that flows through it remain mysterious. Reanalyses, which combine model output and observations, may help to address how and why atmospheric composition varies in this region, but only if they reliably capture the what and where of key controlling processes. In this work, we show that current reanalyses are beginning to meet these criteria, and provide an outlook on how these products could be designed to help mitigate the looming "data desert" in the upper troposphere and stratosphere. We further identify and describe the leading modes of variability in this region and link them to interannual and intraseasonal variability in other components of the Asian summer monsoon.
